TLC For Your Speaker System - Learn about speaker repair

Your speakers are an integral part of your sound system but how often do you think of their needs? Yes, speaker have needs! With a few simple techniques and procedures you can lengthen the life of your prized speaker system.

The first thing to bear in mind is that heat will break them down. Try to keep your speakers out of extremely hot environments as much as possible. Having an 85 degree day is not something to worry about. However, storing speakers long term in a metal building or similar environment where the temp can be over 100 degrees for months at time could be a problem. Give some thought to external heat and avoid it as much as possible.

Internal heat is another issue. Make sure your speakers have adequate breathing space around them. Allowing blankets or other items pile on top of or around your equipment can allow heat to build up during operation and cause breakdown.

Same thing with moisture. High humidity environments can break down the paper cone in speakers so avoid storing or using speaker often in these environments.

Dust is another problem. It can degrade the performance of your speakers and should be removed periodically. Cans of compressed air work well for this.

As you likely know, speakers use magnets to function. If you store your equipment near a magnetic source it can disrupt the normal functioning of the speaker and potentially cause damage.

Static electricity is another hazard. Be aware that walking across carpet in a dry environment can cause a charge to build up on your person. Touching a speaker and having the electricity discharge into it can damage it. Really this tip extends to any electronic device. I once destroyed a computer by touching the metal lock on the front of it. The resulting static discharge flowed from the lock to the motherboard and melted the CPU!

Finally, most of these hazards are very self evident upon reflection, but many people don't take a moment to consider them and their equipment suffers as a result. Take the time to evaluate where you intend to use your speakers and the potential for damage. Doing so can save your speakers - and your checkbook as well!
