Solutions to Common Surround Sound System Problems

Surround sound is an awesome technology for watching movies. Bullet sounds and special effects in general are just much more enjoyable when they are coming from different directions. These systems are relatively straight forward to set up in theory but there are always special issues to overcome. This article will discuss a few common ones and how to address them.

The first issue is physical. How do you get the wires to the rear speakers in a 5.1, 6.1 or 7.1 system? In homes where wires were not installed during construction you can be left thinking that there is just no place to run them without crossing walkways or doing major construction to run them in the walls or ceiling. One option is to install special wire under the carpet that is only an eighth of an inch in diameter. Of course, you will need to pull up your carpet and then reset it but this is much easier than ripping drywall. And perhaps it is the perfect excuse to get new carpet for your media room!

Another wiring issue is, well, other wires. Be sure to keep your speaker wires away from electrical wires as these can cause interference and sound quality degradation.

Next, speaker placement. People will sometimes complain that the sound is "off". Often this is a matter of speaker placement. Be sure that your front right and left channel speakers are equidistance from the screen center and placed at a 45 degree angle from the listeners ears. If your space allows it, position the right and left channel speakers twelve feet from each other.

Additionally, when looking for your first system or contemplating a new, upgraded system you may run across wireless surround speakers. Steer clear! The sound quality on these speakers is poor as compared to their wired brethren. Plus, if you live in a populated area the frequency of your speakers might overlap with nearby cell phones and other wireless devices. That is a certain recipe to drive you nuts! Wireless is a cool technology but avoid it with surround systems.

Hopefully, these quick tips and insights will help you avoid frustration and anxiety when installing your system.
